Køge is noted for great shopping in a cosy setting with a well organised shopping scene including shops for every taste.
A large number of specialist shops are located round the Market Square and in the adjoining streets. As an extra attraction, several of the shops are hiding behind the house fronts in the old city centre.
In the heart of Køge is Denmark’s largest market square outside Copenhagen, providing the setting for cosy market trade on Wednesdays and Saturdays. After some pleasant shopping in the Market Square on Saturdays, you can go on to the courtyards (in spring and summer), attracted by the tunes of jazz to enjoy with great beer from Køge’s own brewery, Braunstein or other micro breweries.
Eating places in Køge
To appease your hunger, it is easy to find a good eating place in Køge – also if you are a family with children on holiday in our town.
There are restaurants, inns, cafés and informal excursion eateries to choose from, with menus to satisfy any palate, whether you prefer the sophisticated French cuisine or a homely Danish fare.
If you like good music, you will have ample opportunity to satisfy your ears. One of the places to go for live music every Friday and Saturday night is Café Vivaldi, located in the Market Square Køge Torv. There is also live music every Friday night and Saturday afternoon at the Irish pub Toldboden on Køge Harbour.
In summer (from May to September, weather permitting) you can sit in the open, enjoying a beer to live music in the courtyards at Hugos Kælder (jazz) or Restaurant Christians Minde (mixed), or on the harbour outside Restaurant Guldfisken. Check with the various venues for their lists of events.
Fishing vessels as well as large freight ships anchor in the old harbour in Køge, which makes the it a fascinating scenery to watch when you have taken a seat at one of the many restaurants with open air service.
Køge Marina is a recreational area 2 km north of the city centre. It has plenty of maritime atmosphere, a wonderful sandy breach and cosy eating places.
