Bike lane at Byskovskolen
As part of Traffic at Children’s Height’s five-year project “Students as Traffic Experts,” Byskov School in Benløse officially opened an awesome traffic playground and pump track in the schoolyard on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
Class 5.b from Byskov School hosted the opening event, which was attended by both Mayor Andreas Karlsen and City Council member Klaus Hansen.
The traffic playground is a safe space where children can learn how to navigate traffic securely—without having to worry about cars. The colorful track is painted directly onto the schoolyard surface and also features a fun pump track, which quickly became a hit.
Before the official opening, several students tested the track for a full hour. Afterwards, they shared great ideas for improvements and new features—among other things, the number of roundabouts on the track was doubled.
Open to everyone
During the day, the school uses the track, while in the evenings and on weekends it is open to the public. Everyone is welcome to stop by and try it out when the school is closed—and don’t worry: no cars are allowed in the area.
But remember Byskov School’s own motto: No helmet, no wheels!
FACTS:
Class 5.b at Byskov School has, over the past few months, participated in the project “Students as Traffic Experts.” The students have identified unsafe areas along the route to school and have proposed ideas to improve them. The project aims to enhance traffic safety around the school and encourage more students to walk and cycle.
In collaboration with Ringsted Municipality, the following traffic measures are being tested and will later be evaluated:
- Improved pedestrian route in the parking area: A safe route will be established from Præstevej to the school. A designated pedestrian area will be created on the southern side of the parking lot. There will be no entry for parents to the hall’s parking lot between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.
- Cyclists and pedestrians on Skolevangen: To make it clear where cyclists and pedestrians should be positioned, pedestrian symbols will be painted on the sidewalk and bicycle symbols along the side of the road.
- Show consideration on Skolestien: To make the path safer, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to be considerate of each other. Posters will be placed along the path.
- Competition: Class 5.b has developed a competition for grades 3–7 to encourage more students to cycle and walk to school. The competition starts on Wednesday, April 29, and ends when students have collected 1,000 points.
- New cycle track in the schoolyard: As part of the project, a new cycle track has been established in the schoolyard. Students may use it at selected times during the school day as well as in their free time.
